tranny/differential noise

I need a wrench head to help me out. I've had this awful noise in my Cub's gearbox/differential for a while, and I can't figure it out. There has been some water in there, and there is some rust damage, but I don't think it accounts for all of the noise. I've had it apart 3 times, each time thinking I got it. Go figure. It makes noise when I move or turn, and quiets down when it is going down hill. All gears, reverse included. I have replaced both carrier bearings on the differential, and both bearings on the input and output tranny shafts. Just for grins, I filled it to the top with oil, to see if it would die down if it was completely submerged. Still howls like a banshee. There is one thing that puzzles me. The tranny output shaft moves quite a bit. Rearward, it sits on a two piece bearing, then threads it's wat through gears and spacers forward. In front, it has a bearing, then a nut, then a cap.Now, this bearing sits in the case rather loosely, so it slides back and forth. It has a spring clip so it doesn't go all the way through, but you can push from the back, and send it out 3/8 inch. the only thing holding it in is the cap. That is not right to me. The shaft can move back and forth and mess up the gear tollerance. I put it together the way I found it, but I can't think it's right. Does anybody have experience taking trannies and diffs apart...besides me, now?
