Yes, there is a good chance it is the coil. But, there is also a good chance it is the condenser. When the coil quits, it is usually a gradual breakdown with missing as well as recovery when the coil cools. With a condenser, it is usually an "on" or "off" situation, which sounds a lot like your condition.
Since condensers are a lot cheaper than coils, replace it first. Even if it is not the condenser, it doesn't hurt to have a spare on hand. Best of luck.
