You should remove the spark plugs and squirt generous amounts of automatic transmission fluid into the cylinders before you ever attempt to crank the engine. Wouldn't hurt to change the engine oil and replace the filter. Also would be a very good idea to remove the carburetor, dis-assemble, and give it a good look over and at least a quick cleaning, likewise with the fuel tank and fuel sediment bowl.

On the ignition side of it, at least remove the distributor cap, inspect it, and while it is off, take a look at the contact points. If they look OK, drag a piece of paper between the contacts to clean them up a bit. If the points look worn and corroded, replace them.
