see if it still has a generator on it or if it has an alternator. if its an alternator, its 12v. if it has a generator, check the tag, if the tag is black, its a 6v genny. if the tag is red its a 12v genny. way back when, the early 60's chevy 12v gennys were a direct replacement for the 6v i-h genny. they could be run either pos or neg ground. i have one m that is 12v pos ground, also a w-9 that is 12v pos ground.
