Hi, my first guess is fuel starvation. When a Diesel injection pump is being fuel starved, the immediate reaction is to fully open the governor, thus the revving of the engine. Are your fuel filters good? Is the fuel shut OFF/ON control working properly? Had the key fallout of rod at injection pump and fuel shut OFF go to the almost OFF position. Does your 444 have a fuel lift pump on the right side of the engine with the hand pump? If it does, open the bleed screws on the injection pump and hand pump until the fuel comes out the lower screw, then tighten it and keep pumping until the fuel comes out the upper screw and then tighten it. If you don't get fuel out of the bleed screws then there is a problem between hand pump and injection pump. Is the crankcase filling with Diesel fuel? Is the engine backfiring into the air cleaner? If yes, could be the camshaft timing gear woodruff key has sheared off.
