Have the operators manual and has read through several times about how to make sure the distributor and timing mark on the flywheel are in time. My tractor is off because now that the carburetor is working properly, it wants to kick back when trying to hand-crank - so I know that the timing is not kosher...
My dad always said one of the best ways to time a motor is to tap into a vacuum port and move the distributor until you have maximum vacuum at idle.
Would this work for the C123? Vacuum access is easy with the pipe plug just above the carb.
