I think it makes sense thinking with your head and heart. If you are mowing 3.5 acres, you'll either get really tired mowing with a scythe or push-mower, or you'll get a "garden tractor" riding mower which will run you as much as $1500 and wear out in a few years, or get a cub which will run you $2000 (that's a fully restored model) and last forever. So it's a bit more money, but economically more sound. Don't worry about your mechanical ability, either. The guys at this website will teach you eveything you need to know. Besides, lots of guys spend way more than $2000 on their hobbies, and their hobbies don't keep the grass cut or the snow plowed. Just my thoughts.
