Daniel, You are definitely correct in that it belongs between the battery and the coil. Many will argue that it is unimportant but there is reason for putting it there. The location has to do with the collapse of the coil to create the best possible spark by restricting the flow of current back toward the battery and confining the current in the coil when the points open.
