There is a big difference between using a reproduction tag to replace a damaged or missing tag, and using a tag from a different number: 1. Using a reproduction tag to replace a damaged tag, and then putting the correct number on the tag, is just another form or restoration. If putting a new tag on to replace a missing tag, and the serial number is not known, the serial number field should be left blank, in my opionion. 2. Transferring a tag off another tractor ensures a innaccurate serial number, gives the impression that the tractor is more complete than what it is, and makes it difficult to determine what has happened to the tractor. It also encourages serial number plate theft, which has been a problem that comes up from time to time.
