12 Volt H's?

I bought 2 H's last spring. I am now first getting in a position to work on them. Neither runs-yet! One has a Magneto. The other has a distributor. When I pulled the hoods off the tractors the one with the mag has an alternator. The other one has a generator with new regulator. There are battery boxes on the side that are not the standard 6 volt battery box. My questions are: Can I tell if they are set up to run on 12 a volt system? Will a mag function in a 12 volt system. And which direction do I turn the oil check valve to open. I twisted on off when I was a kid. Thanks for the help in advance.
