The MAGNUM is based largely off of the next generation IH tractor that was already in the works. CASE had its own new series they were working on too, but it was dropped.
When Tenneco bought the IH Ag Division and mmixed it with CASE (which they wholly owned) they wanted the new tractor, Axial Flow combine and the dealer network.
The CASE dealer network was poor, (at best) with few locations nationwide (and worldwide) compared to IH.
After the merger, the CASE tractors were kept in the line for 2-3 years until the MAGNUM could be fully developed. TENNECO did not buy the FARMALL plant in Rock Island, IL where the IH tractors were made. They needed to have something to sell, so they bridged the gap with re-painted CASE tractors.
