Maybe you just need to polarize the generator. It amounts to momentarily connecting bat. on battery or other battery location to gen on generator. This sets up the magnetic field so the generator can charge. There is a write up under frequently asked questions that will give you more details. This is a simple but necessary procedure. On a cub this assumes you have the Battery+ as ground and the negative connected to the load. If you are wired the other way then change it so that when you are looking at schematics or reading about cubs you will be set up as original. The 48 cub was positive ground. I.e. there is no resistance between the connected ground and the battery terminal that is grounded.
