I think I may know what your problem is. The magneto drive lug is driven and kept in time with a woodruff (half-moon) key. This key can shear off and cause your problem. This can be tricky because the drive lug will continue to turn the mag a while then slip a little then turn the mag then slip and so on. Therefore, you can put it in time and as soon as the impulse engages it causes the drive to slip a little.
My advice is to remove the mag, remove the drive plate that is held on with two bolts, remove the nut (probably a castle nut) in the center of the drive lug with a deep well socket, and pull the drive lug off the shaft. I'll bet you'll find the remains of a key in there.
