Crank-Start Kick-Back!

While trying to start my 39-A yesterday it kicked back and almost broke my hand! I've started her many times before without a problem. I followed the same routine as always ie. full choke, 1/2 throttle, etc. Now I'm a little afraid of her. Oh yes, I always crank on the up stroke and keep my thumb on the same side as my fingers. I'm spooked enough to consider selling her and getting an electric start tractor. Any other thoughts on what I can do to prevent getting hurt? I've never let my boys (15 & 13) start her. Maybe I'm getting scared off too easily. Thanks,
