Thanks for all the tips guys. On looking at the fifth gear closer (and with a flashlight) I can see that the gear is fine but the other gear that it moves forward to engage is gone. I swear that it has been machined off as I can see tool marks such as a lathe would leave and no pits or jagged edges as if the gear had been stripped. Not sure what really happened there but short of replacing that gear the H will never have a fifth. The bolt stopping the slide rail has already been shortened.
