I'll add to johns ideas that the cutout relay (in the VR)might have a latching voltage that is just short of working when the field poles magnetism decays just a little. But the VR should be providing a near zero ohm path for the field. I would use a very good meter and check the F terminal on the Vr (with the wire disconnected, from chassis ground (metal of tractor) to the F terminal should be less than one ohm. If more, that is why the F terminal needs to be grounded by jumper o get it charging. Jim
