I took it apart today and found a few things out. One is that there is no thermostat in the housing. I don't know how to put a new one in. I'll be getting one from NAPA, probably. I have the head off, there are no obvious cracks or damaged places to my eye, although there is a lot of rust around the head gasket packed into the spaces between the head and block. The head gasket has been there for a while because it had at least one layer of paint over it. I'm thinking of putting in a new head gasket and a thermostat and seeing if that takes care of the problem with the coolant bubbling, but should I be doing anything else first or instead while I have it apart?
