I always thought that the only reason the generator and starter were black was because when the farmer repaired or replaced one, the new starter from Delco or whoever it came from painted them black as they didn't know what tractor it was for. If you want it like original nothing was actually painted black by IH. I just had a generator rebuilt at a rebuild place and they painted it black. I painted it red when I painted the rest of the tractor. Each person has their opinion on what looks good. At any tractor show you see all kinds of custom paint jobs, like all the bolt heads painted silver for example. Roger
