The 12 volt alt. will definately overcharge the 8 volt battery. You should put in a 12 volt batt. if yoou want a 12 volt system, or switch it back to 6 volts. The only real problem with a C with 6 volts is lights are hard to come by any more. As far as the mag goes, it isn't commected to the electrical system so it doesn't matter. The weskest part of a C was the starter drive. It has an inertia type bendix drive, and if it gets sticky it will not engage the flywheel right, and grind the teeth down. A 12 volt battery will spin the starter up faster and probably help in this area. I was raised on a C and wish I could get one again. A gret little tractor that would do a lot of work.
