That roller is a rolling cutter that cuts the soil ahead of the point on the moldboard. Its purpose is to make a clean cut in the soil the cutter could also have a bracket with a small triangle shaped anc curved piece that would turn the surface trash over thus leaving the turned soil clean with surface trash inder the turned soil.
