I don't necessarily agree with the other posts. Put it in 4th pull the TA back, and push on the brakes. If the TA is working and you push on the brakes, the tractor should slow and be under load. If it does not labor the engine, it is slipping, the tractor will probably stop moving. The main cause of a bad TA is that it is shifted too slow, pull the lever back rapidly and push it forward rapidly. Don' hesitate in between. It will slow faster when under load. Using the tractor with the TA back all the time should not hurt it. An advantage is that you can split the speeds in each gear and have 8 field speeds instead of 4.
