When you shift it into Low (or TA mode) make sure you do it fairly crisp.
Just as Mike said, you should feel it down shift.
One way to test if it is strong is to put the tractor in fourth, throw the TA into low, and then stomp on the brakes. If the tractor stops and you hear whining noises, imediately release the brakes and throw the TA into high. This means your TA is weak and needs work if you plan to use it. If the tractor starts to bog down and nearly dies, then your TA is good and strong for now.
Just remember the TA is not meant to be a Low range gear. It is just meant to get you through a tough spot in the field. Also when the TA is in Low, the tractor can free-wheel in the direction of the selected gear, like a one-way clutch. i.e. if you have her in 1st with the TA in low and start down hill you will roll as fast as the tractor will roll down the hill until the planetary gears can't hang on anymore and come out at the speed of light.
