Most ammeters' terminals are unmarked. Or perhaps one terminal was marked with a dot of ink which is now long gone...
Not to worry however. Simply connect wiring to the ammeter however it's handy. Now turn on the lights or ignition. If it shows discharge you are all set.
But if it shows charge, simply disconnect and swap the connections. (For safety remove the battery ground terminal while making the swap!)
Unfortunately there's no way to recalibrate/clean the original ammeter - it's a sealed assembly. But new repro ammeters are readily available and inexpensive.
