John T hit this on the head! If you held the jumper wire from bat to field even for 2 seconds, it may have smoked the regulator. The field terminal is a ground through a set of points in the regulator. Jumping to it can weld the points together. If it was a dramatic spark, or you held it there for a few seconds, there may be repurcussions. The others are correct in that the battery is supposed to be pos ground. Turn on the lights (not running) if the amp gauge goes right, (either the battery is in backwards, or someone has set it up for the battery to be in with negetive ground. Jim
