Yes, it could be that your generator is not polarized, especially if you have disconnected the battery and/or ground lately. To repolarize (while ignition is on but tractor doesn't have to be running) connect a jumper between the BAT terminal on the regulator and the A terminal of the generator. Just touch it briefly, there should be a small spark. BAT is the middle lead on the regulator, A should be the terminal farthest away from the engine and should be stamped into the metal. You should also clean the commutator on the generator with sandpaper. this can also prevent charging if it has crudded up. However, you should seriously think about converting to an alternator, much more reliable.
