You are absolutely right. When the Touch-Control system was introduced, the manuals called out 10W motor oil. By 1950, they called out Touch-Control Fluid.
There are 2 observations I'll make from that information:
1) The system needs very low viscosity oil. If the engine was filled with an appropriate summer weight oil (30 or 10W30), the 10W will lower the viscosity a lot. The oil in the engine is still contaminated and needs to be changed.
2) IH developed/acquired, produced and released a special hydraulic oil just for the Touch-Control systems within 2 years of the first Touch-Control going into production. That strongly suggests that they had problems using motor oil in the system. How badly to you want to repeat the experiment to find out what the problem was?
