I am another one unsure of what it is - what was the purpose of the gear drive coming from the wheel?
As to the spokes in the wheel - many of the implements around here that have spoked wheels date to the 1930s or earlier. We had an implement that in the 1890s to 1910s was a one row tobacco planter pulled by oxen.... we used it with horses, a cub tractor,(when the tank rusted out) then became a corn and veg planter (till that part siezed up) - then a potato planter, then a wagon.. am now considering finding another one for parts and putting it back to work the wheels and axles are still in great shape.
