I'd imagine the hub will come off the end of the axle without any further disassembly. I do believe that if you have to pull the axle that the housing has to come off. One tapered roller bearing rides out near the outer end of the housing, and another is on the inboard end of the axle and rides in a race in the main rear-end casting. The axle comes out of the housing toward the transmission.
Someone correct me, but I am thinking the 6's had inboard bull gears. The bull gear needs to be unbolted from the end of the axle and supported to pull the housing, too, if they did. The 7's and up had outboard bull gears and the bull gear is inside the axle housing.
If you have to replace the axle you may as well spring the extra money and get a new seal and bearings, too.
