I had the same problem with a JD "A". Turned out the radiator manufacturer's way of rating the heat transfer capacity of a core is based on a certain number of gallon per minute being circulated through the core. Thermo siphon systems don't pump that many gallons per minute 'cause these new cores all have real small cross section tubes.
