Boy thats a loaded question?? Ok lets start off by pulling the cowl off the tractor and looking at the linkage on top[ and checking for excess wear . Then pull the kick panel and looking at the linkage there for ware . Now i want to tell you that ANY excess wear on them shifters means a lot of lost movement . Lets face it they were just used tomuch when new. One more thing with the 06- 86 series tractors clutch trans brake and dump valve is vary important as to how well they will shift. If these are out of adjustment then the tugging and jerking start and this adds up to shifter failure and added wear. Now if you find a problem on the upper shifting linkage then fix that up by replacing what is needed first do not try and make adjustments to make up for wore out parts . Now if you find that the shifter linkage is not the problem then we will have to go deeper ionto the more difficult stuff . That will requier the removal of the deck plate and any hyd. lines that may be over top of the shifter cover . Once you have removed everything that is in your road then yo start to remove the linkage and the bolts out of the top cover . Now not being there with you to see if this tractor has been changed over to the spring loaded park loc. you will have to look at the linkage that goes from the park loc lever and see if it has a turn buckle or a straight rod going to it and if it has any spring pressure . If it does have spring pressure then you MUST block that up and the best way of doing that is witha 1/2 inch nut as you need to place a spacer of 3/4 of and inch under it to hold it in the unlock position and a 1/2 inch nut is just what the doctor ordered. Next you will need to remove the side cover with the clipped corner on the left side of the range transmission case behind the left step as this is where the rev. shift fork is , when you remove that cover IF the hyd. level is at the full mark then you will loose about 1 gallon of oil out of there if it is over full well it will get real messy real fast . So you may want to drain out five or so gallon out of the speed transmission drain plug. as it is the easiest to get to . Now that you have that all done you will need a stiff bladed putty knife that is real sharp and drive it under the top cover in the corners to break the gskt seal as them old gskts really stick . If you have never done one of these before then and extra set of hands comes in real handy as once you have got the top cover loose and start to come straight up the rev. shifting fork will fall out . Becareful not to loose the woodroff key in that shifting rod that goes into the rev, shifting fork. As you may find that the keyway is plum wore out and yqa just may find that the rev. shifting fork is broken , not saying that it is but you may find this . This is due to slamming it into rev. because of yep you guessed it the clutch and dump vale being out of adjustment . Once you have the top cover up and off the tractor then you will see the CAM on the bottom side of the cover and you may find that the shifter lever that goes into that cam has the key way wore plum slap out of it and that the roll pin is broken and that the top cover is wore out also and maybe the cam detent is about toast . may find that the detent spring is broken and some of the rollers are missing . Now if the top cover is wore out you can get a after market cover or if you have access to a machine shop you can have a bushing machined and have the hole bored to have the bushing installed BUT the center of the shifter hole must not be moved in any way . It is not a hard job to fix it BUT everything MUST BE tight and anything that is not replace it . This job takes me about three hours to do IF everything goes pretty good as i have fixed many . One other little thing IF this tractor still has the OLD turn buckle park loc NOW IS THE TIME TO UP GRADE TO THE SPRING LOADED ONE . The life you save may be yours or a loved one. If you have problems let me know and i will give you my land line and we can talk . Once you get this all back together i will tell you how to set the clutch the trans brake and the dump valve the easy way and when done that tractor will shift with two fingers .
