Brake cleaner a good method, but fairly expensive. I like to soak mine in the parts washer for a long while. Then I hit it with air and soak it again. It looks better, but not perfect.
I bought a toilet bowl cleaner at the dollar store that fits the intake pipe and inside of the air cleaner perfectly. I use that for those areas.
You can take them apart and clean that media or even replace it. It sounds fairly difficult bc you have to drill out spot welds and reweld some stuff. I am sure somebody will let you know a little more about that side of cleaning.
