I do not think it is a adjustment issue , more like worn or loose linkage or you have a broken roller in the range cover or on the shifting fork . adjustment is the last thing i look at . So pull the right cowl sheet metal and work your way donw and see what all is worn . everything must be snug with no play . At times the headed pins get excessive ware and they get sloppy and a little ware here and a little wear there adds up and ya get a no go . So ya start at the shifter and work your way down to the range cover and then if you have to remove it , BUT you need to pull the side cover off thew left side of the rear end so you can have access to the rev. shift fork . As the linkage to it will come out with the range cover and it will fall over and when you try to go back together you will not bet the rod back in . If you have to go that deep into it then get a book and see what your getting into BEFORE you open it up.
