Removing the whole shaft will not ruin the outer seal since it sits in the outer bearing retainer (also 4 bolt job) and will move with the shaft. If you wish I can send you a scan of a cross sectional drawing of the final drive assy from my service manual tomorrow. While you have it apart you may wish to replace the outer bearing and the seal as well anyway. Another idea (redneck idea, maybe) for removing the shot inner bearing without removing the whole shaft is this: demolish the cage in which the bearing balls sit with a screwdriver and remove bits and pieces with nose pliers. Remove all balls and outer bearing ring. Now you have created enough room to pull the inner ring with a self centering/clamping puller.
