Original seal had a felt incorporated in a double seal arrangemt and actually had the leather lip seal lip toward outside. Not sure of your gasket set, but some contain the felt for the water pump.
Just writing in to agree, most of the seals now days are thinner than the old ones. They ditched the felt and leather for materials that seal better.
