Jon, i did similar on my 48 M. Changed battery to neg ground 12vdc, changed all lights to 12vdc and put a resistor on wire to distributor so points dont get too much voltage when running, only when starting. Also changed coil for the h*** of it. You might have to change wires on amp guage so it reads right. That was 5 yrs ago and it runs fine.
