Ok, first the trans problem, can you get it in gear? can you get it in other gears? Could be a broken shift fork or a bent or broken rail. I would just take the top cover off the trans its quite simple. As for the over heating how is the condition of the radiator? Are the fins nice and clear? is there dirt, and sludge build up inside? Could be plugged water jackets like you say however i would start with the radiator first. Take it off and clean it yourself or have it sent to a shop for a pro cleaning, there generally not to much to have this done. Money well spent.
