Simplist thing for damaged packing nut slots that works for me if nut is removed, is to grind nut flat on two sides so a open end wrench fits. Then when it back on I have a thin open end wrench that fits. Just have to turn the fan at the same time wrench is turned to keep drive studs clear of wrench.
