IH 240 12 volt conversion once again

Got a question regarding my 12 volt conversion. Got it done and the tractor ran great, but the solenoid has gone out. Problem is, this is the second solenoid. I turn the key and press the starter and, nothing. My starter is the original six volt and it is in great shape. The solenoid is external and mounted on the starter. My question is do I need a 12 volt solenoid. And if not, does anyone know why the solenoids are going out so fast. Thanks again, in advance.
