I bought my 6v/12v charger at orscheln for 30 bucks and it is much safer than trying to jump a 6v with a 12v, You can however jump the starter directly with 12 volts you just have to keep the polarity right, have the ignition on, keep it in neutral, and let someone know you are going to do it because someone else will have to call for help as you will have been run over by your tractor if you knock it in gear.
