YES its possible and YES Ive seen batteries BLOW UP when its done.
If I just had to jump a 6 volt tractor and didnt have another 6 volt battery to use, I would JUMP THE STARTER ONLY (where possible) to get it to crank and let the in place 6 volt battery power up the ignition as/if needed
