If the shop put a 12 volt solenoid on it Id sure leave it. If the old one was for 6 volts it likely could have lasted a long time if 12 volts was used instead, SUBJECT TO how long its held engaged (how fast tractor starts) and obviously how often it gets used AND ITS RATING. It depends on the current rating of the solenoid and its heat dissipation capacity (its power rating), they are more of a current and magnetic field device then any precise voltage sensitive unit.
I wouldnt envision anyyyyyy problem pulling the solenoid in so its simply a matter of its current and heat dissipationrating if used at 12 versus 6 volts. My guess (absent any of its specs and ratings mind you) is it would have been okay.
