If you saw the rotor but no points when you removed the dist. cap then you probably have a magneto. The wire is a ground wire from the push(off)- pull(on) switch. This grounds the magneto to kill the engine.
There is a point set inside the magneto. You need to remove three screws (two inside and one outside) that are behind the rotor. The point gap is .013". Good luck!
