an m can be a pretty thirsty tractor, especially compared to an h. when you say it smokes a lot, is it black smoke? if it belches out a lot of black smoke when you throttle it up quickly, its prolly running way to rich. generally to set the main jet on the carb, have the tractor warm and then set the throttle wide open. turn the main jet in till it starts to stumble, then back it out till it gets sweet. it shouldnt smoke black. pull a spark plug and see if they are black and sooty. running to rich a mix will wah the oil off the cylinders and lead to pre-mature wear. also will dilute the oil with gas.
