I went aboard the Forrestal to see my brother when the ship was in Newport News for a short refit. That probably would have been late spring of '66. I was stationed about 150 miles away at Camp Lejeune, NC. He took me all around the ship. A few months later, I spent three months on LST 1177. I think that was its first deployment.
It was later that Sen John McCain had one of his (four ?) accidents on board.
