We had a '54 SM that we ran duls on from the time it was new. For years it was the only tractor in the area that had duals on it, probably till the early '60s. They didn't make an actual dual back then so we bought a 2nd set of cast wheels, rims & tires. The inner wheels were put on with the concave dished out & the dual with it in. Made for a tight squeeze on the operator's platform but it worked.
We used the SM for cultivating as well so when we removed the duals we would remove the inner wheels as well, reverse them so the concave was out & put them back on.. Did the same when we pulled the dual on the furrow side off for plowing. Seems like a lot of work now but it was the way it was & we didn't think much of it. I remember we had a small flat tool that had several rollers on it that we would insert into the keway on the axle when the tractor was jacked up the weight of the wheel was on the tool which made it easier to roll the wheel off. Though it always didn't work as it was suppose to.
Today there are several different options fpr dualing an M or SM.
We never had axle or rearend problems with the SM. Tractor had 4 1/8" Firecrater pistons so had plenty of power for a SM. We pulled 3x14 plow with it 10" deep in heavy black soils sometimes had to shift to 1st gear in tough spots. Pulled a 9' disc, a 12' field cultivator, or a 10' cultimulcher.
