Take a short piece of wire, and touch one end to the BAT terminal on your regulator or relay, and briefly touch the other to the GEN terminal. This should give you a small spark.
Seems too, simple, but that's all there is to it. All that's really required is that your battery be hooked up before you polarize, because it's that polarity that the generator will now charge to.
