12 volt battery hook-up

I have a Farmall 'A' that my father had and the generator never worked on it. We left the belt off of it because the bearing finally went-out and finally I took the generator off. I know he use a 12 volt battery on the tractor because of the hook up he put on it. Now, without a generaror or alternator on it, would it matter which way I hooked the battery up to it? The reason I asked is because I noticed yesterday when I used it, I had the battery hooked up to a negative ground, and I have hooked it up to a positive ground before. Does it matter without a charging system on it?
