Donald, this may be way off base, but I had a similiar experience with a C of mine. It might run great for several hours raking hay, and then suddenly die, or run real rough and then seem to straighten out. I went thru the whole nine yards from removing the carb. draining fuel. replacing plugs and plug wires. I was about to check the engine timing with my timing light and noticed a "miss" in the firing of my timing light. It might fire perfectly for a minute and then skip. It seemed to do the same thing on other cylinders, although you couldn't really notice it by ear. Moral of my story.....put in new condeser and points....and bingo...no more problems...hey...let us know what straightens your tractor out...
