In answer to your 2nd question you are right in that it must be mounted as showing in the diagram otherwise it will likely creat a binding of sorts when the hitch is raised and lowered depending how tight it fits, or how worn the linkage is.
As far as your first question all that I have that may or may not help you is this photo that was taken a couple years ago. For as you can see in it, my dads 340 has since been converted from the tel-e-depth to a standard two way valve and the control lever is located up to the right of the steering wheel in dash. so all the old lnkage has since been disconnected and removed. Sorry I cannot help you more on that one hopefully another member will jump in.
