If you have a generator with a cutout, I seriously doubt that in the 5 to ten minutes you mentioned that you are overcharging the battery with the low output from these type generators. Simply place your hand on the outside of the battery case and determine how hot it is. If the battery is not warm, you most likely just have a venting problem. The cutout on the generator does not "cutout" when the battery becomes charged. On these systems the generator charges all the time that the engine is running and the cutout opens the circuit from the generator to the battery when the engine is shutdown.
